When it comes to water softener salt, cheaper isn’t always better. Like most products, a lower price often reflects lower quality, but many people assume salt is just salt. Unfortunately, that misconception can lead to serious problems for your water softener and expensive repairs.

Is Cheap Water Softener Salt Really a Problem?

Not All Water Softener Salt Is the Same

The biggest factor affecting salt quality is the raw material (feedstock) and how it is manufactured. Different salt sources have very different purity levels and contamination risks.

Common Salt Types and Typical Quality

Rock Salt

  • No consistent manufacturing standards
  • Possible contaminants: mud, stones, gravel

Sea Salt

  • No universal purity standards
  • Possible contaminants: sand, organic material, debris

Solar Salt

  • No consistent global standards
  • Possible contaminants: sand, minerals, organic remains

Food Grade Salt

  • Minimum 97% sodium chloride (NaCl) under Codex standards
  • Can be produced from any of the above sources
  • May still contain significant impurities

While “food grade” sounds reassuring, it can legally contain up to 3% impurities — that’s around 750 grams of non-salt material in a 25kg bag.

The Highest Quality Option: PDV Salt

Pure Dried Vacuum (PDV) Salt, manufactured to BS 998:1990 or EN973 Type A, is widely considered the best choice for water softeners.

Key benefits include:

  • Minimum 99.6% NaCl purity
  • Strict limits on contaminants and impurities
  • Consistent tablet strength and performance
  • Cleaner operation and fewer maintenance issues

Although PDV salt may cost more upfront, it helps protect your equipment and can reduce long-term service costs.

What Makes a High-Quality Salt: Tablet or Block?

Beyond purity, manufacturing quality plays a major role in performance.

1. Particle Size Distribution

Properly graded salt particles create stronger tablets that resist crumbling and reduce dust formation.

2. Compaction Pressure

Well-compressed tablets are stronger and produce fewer fines. Lower manufacturing pressure reduces production costs — but often results in weaker, lower-quality products.

3. Moisture Content

Some low-cost salt is made from undried material, meaning part of what you pay for is water rather than salt. Higher moisture content also causes tablets to break down more easily.

4. Salt Creep and Efflorescence

Poorly manufactured salt absorbs excess brine, leading to “fluffy” growth on tablets. Over time, this can cause:

  • Salt bridging (salt forms a solid mass)
  • Blockages in cabinet softeners
  • Systems appearing full but not softening water

Salt bridging is a common cause of service callouts and is typically not covered under manufacturer warranties.
